FAQ
Common Questions

Everything you need to know about PaveRank before getting started.

Does our road data have to be entered manually?
No. When you sign up for PaveRank, your road network loads automatically — street names, lengths, and GPS coordinates included. You can be scoring road conditions the same day. See the data note below for accuracy details.
Do we need a GIS specialist to use this?
No. PaveRank is built for a one or two-person Public Works department with no GIS background. If your team can use a smartphone, they can use PaveRank from day one, with no training required.
What if we already have a shapefile from a previous study?
Upload it directly. PaveRank accepts shapefile ZIP files, GeoJSON, KML, and CSV. A simple column mapper matches your existing field names. Your data imports instantly and replaces the auto-loaded data.
Can we search and filter ROW assets by type on the map?
Yes. A filter bar lets you select any asset type — stop signs, catch basins, guardrails, bridges, ADA ramps, and more. The map and list update simultaneously. You can stack filters (e.g. stop signs + failed retroreflectivity) and create work orders for all filtered assets in one tap.
Can we enter our own cost rates for road treatments?
Yes. PaveRank has a Cost Settings page where you enter your own unit costs for each treatment type. Every cost estimate in your CIP recalculates automatically when you save. A built-in annual inflation rate (default 4%) keeps Year 3–5 estimates realistic.
Does PaveRank track service life for assets like guardrails, catch basins, and culverts?
Yes. Every asset type has a configurable expected service life. Signs use FHWA-mandated schedules. For everything else — guardrails (25 years), catch basins (30 years), culverts (25–50 years), seawalls, sidewalks, ADA ramps — PaveRank uses industry standard defaults your town can adjust. PaveRank calculates the replacement year, shows a lifespan progress bar, and sends a reminder the year before replacement is due.
Can we add or remove road segments from our network?
Yes. Add a new segment by drawing it on the map. To remove one, you archive it — it disappears from your active map and CIP but all inspection history, work orders, and cost records are preserved. Archived segments can be restored at any time from Settings.
Can we add or remove individual assets like stop signs or light poles?
Yes. Tap Add Asset, pick the type, and your GPS location fills in automatically. To remove an asset, archive it rather than delete it — this preserves years of inspection history and photos, which matters for liability documentation. Archive the old record, add a new one with a fresh install date.
Our town uses villages, precincts, or neighborhoods — not wards or districts. Does that work?
Yes. During setup you choose what your town calls its road subdivisions — wards, districts, precincts, villages, neighborhoods, or any custom name. That label appears everywhere in the app. Towns with no subdivisions can turn the feature off entirely.
Does this work on phones in the field?
Yes. Full platform on any smartphone browser — no app download required. Large touch targets for gloved hands, photo capture, GPS auto-fill, and offline mode for areas with no cell signal.
What does the setup fee cover?
The setup fee covers initial data configuration, verifying your road network loaded correctly, and a kickoff call. Most departments are fully operational within 24 hours of signing up.
What happens to our data if we cancel?
It's yours. You can export your complete town data — all road segments, PCI scores, inspection history, asset records, work orders, photos, and CIP reports — as a ZIP file from the Settings page at any time. No export fee.
* About road network data
PaveRank automatically loads your road network at signup — street names, lengths, and GPS geometry are ready before your first login. Completeness and accuracy vary by municipality. You can upload your own shapefile, import a CSV, or manually add and edit any record at any time.
